Halloween Safety Tips: Keep Your Little Ghouls and Goblins Safe!

Halloween Safety Tips!

Halloween Safety Tips!

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays! From spooky decorations to creative costumes and, of course, all the delicious candy, it’s a night full of fun for the whole family! But did you know that children are twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year? Now that’s a scary statistic!

At Home Hazard Prevention, we’re here to make sure your Halloween is all treats and no tricks with our top safety tips for costumes, trick-or-treating, and candy!

Costume Safety

✔️ Choose fire-resistant materials for costumes, wigs, and accessories. ✔️ Go bright! Light-colored costumes are easier to see at night. ✔️ Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags or accessorize with glow sticks and necklaces. ✔️ Ditch the mask! Opt for non-toxic face paint to ensure better visibility. ✔️ Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent tripping hazards. ✔️ Label your child’s costume with your name and contact information, just in case!

Trick-or-Treating Safety

✔️ Supervise young children under 12 or ensure they go in a group with a trusted adult. ✔️ Stick to well-lit areas and follow a pre-planned trick-or-treating route. ✔️ Stay on sidewalks and use crosswalks when crossing the street. ✔️ Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. ✔️ Teach kids to never enter a stranger’s home or car. ✔️ Keep mobile devices away when walking to stay aware of surroundings.

Candy Safety

✔️ Inspect all candy before letting your child eat it. ✔️ Throw out any unwrapped or suspicious-looking treats. ✔️ Avoid homemade goodies unless received from a trusted source. ✔️ Watch for allergens in candies if your child has dietary restrictions.

Alternatives to Trick-or-Treating

Not a fan of door-to-door trick-or-treating? Consider these fun and safe alternatives: Host a Halloween party at home with games and prizes. Visit a trunk-or-treat event at a local community center or school. Plan a Halloween movie night with spooky (but kid-friendly) films.

If you’ll be handing out candy from home, make sure to:
✔️ Turn on your porch light to signal trick-or-treaters.
✔️ Use battery-operated candles instead of real flames in decorations. ✔️ Clear walkways of obstacles to prevent trips and falls. ✔️ Secure pets that might get scared or excited by visitors.
