August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month in Arizona. This program started in the summer of 2004 in response the all the drownings. Most drownings are preventable. As a firefighter, I can tell you that I have been on over 15 fatal drownings and over 40 total water submersion events (non-fatal drownings) in my 10 years on the job. Maricopa County averages over 55 drownings and 180 total water related events A YEAR.
Hopefully you have never been affected by a drowning. But keep in mind it happens to all ages and races. In fact, 40% of all adults do not know how to swim; and adults make up 60% of the fatal drownings in Maricopa County. And knowing CPR can make a HUGE difference.
As a parent, with or without a pool, do you know basic pool fence regulations? How about water safety tips and CPR training? If you don’t, or would like to expand your skills, be sure to call us today! We have CPR instructors (as well as car seat technicians) on staff that would be happy to come to you. Pools (and trampolines) are considered an invitational hazard by Insurance Companies, and if a person drowns in your pool; you may be personally liable. Fences help prevent unwanted access, but they are not fool proof. Just ask any kid who has stacked up a few boxes or chairs to gain access.
Water Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Call us today to learn CPR from your local fireman!
