🌊 August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month: Protect Your Loved Ones! 🚑
Drowning is a tragedy that can strike any family, and most drownings are preventable. August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month in Arizona, a program that started in 2004 in response to the alarming number of drowning incidents. As a firefighter, I have personally responded to over 15 fatal drownings and more than 40 non-fatal water submersion events in just 10 years on the job. In Maricopa County alone, we average over 55 drownings and 180 total water-related emergencies each year. 🚨
🏊♂️ Drowning Affects All Ages
Drownings don’t discriminate—they happen to all ages and races. In fact, did you know that 40% of adults don’t know how to swim? Adults actually account for 60% of fatal drownings in Maricopa County. The sad truth is that many of these deaths could have been prevented with proper swimming skills and lifesaving CPR knowledge. ❤️🩹
🚧 Pool Safety & CPR: Are You Prepared?
As a parent, whether you own a pool or not, it’s crucial to be informed about pool fence regulations, water safety tips, and CPR training. Pools—and even trampolines—are considered invitational hazards by insurance companies. If a person drowns in your pool, you could be held personally liable. While fences can help prevent unwanted access, they’re not foolproof—kids are resourceful and can stack objects to climb over barriers. 🏡
