Greetings Friends!
This week is National EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Week. This may not mean much to you directly, but it should. There is a HUGE group of dedicated individuals across the nation that don’t know you, but in your time of need, they will forego their own health and safety to help you and your loved ones. You might never have used the 911 system, but chances are you know someone who has. No matter the outcome of that situation, an EMS professional spent thousands of hours studying and preparing to be able to help you.
National EMS Week – Our Unsung Heroes
The third week in May (May 15-21, 2022) was designated by President Gerald Ford in 1974 as EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our nation’s communities. The National Association of EMTs ( NAEMT) partners with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) to lead annual EMS Week activities. Together, these organizations are working to celebrate and ensure full recognition of the important contributions made by EMS practitioners in safeguarding the health, safety, and well-being of their communities
The Friends You Never Knew You Had
EMS professionals are a breed unlike any other group of people I know, except for American service men and women. EMS workers, in addition to helping strangers, willingly works nights, weekends, and holidays. They miss birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, their children’s activities, and they miss countless other opportunities. That’s a list of some of the more important milestones we miss. On a daily basis, while at work, we give even more than you realize.
We lose dozens of hours of sleep a month. One third of our meals are ruined, old or delayed because we received a call for help. All these stressors cause a major health concern in our chosen profession. In fact, specifically for firefighters, we spend one-third of our lives at work so of course we miss many family activities. We also tend to die about 12 years sooner than the average population. The physical and emotional tolls that we bear may lead to other problems as well. Divorce is extremely high in our field. Financial distress and mental health issues are rarely spoken about publicly, but they exist. How many other professions deal with this? Not many. While you are home safe, sound, and eating a warm meal surrounded by your loved ones, the EMS professionals are out doing the thankless and nearly impossible.
So, the next time you cross paths with an EMS professional, take a moment to say thank you. After all, they are willing to give their life to protect you, a total stranger.
