It seems like everywhere you look these days you see appreciation for our first responders.  This week, we want focus on some of the unsung heroes in that category.

National Nurses Week 2023

Very few people can say they have never been touched by a nurse. Most of us met one within the first breaths we took. They are the ones who have seen us through any trip to the Emergency Room or a hospitalization. A visit to the primary care physician always means a short visit with one of the nursing staff. Many of them have been voluntarily giving the vaccines for Covid-19. A nurse is usually the first level of care for any medical facility. In the past years of no visitors, they were often the last face our loved ones saw, often holding their hands as they left us.

They clean our wounds, ease our fears, sooth our wounded pride, answer questions, and sometimes, just sit with us. Nurses are our guides through so many situations, most that thankfully none of us will ever experience. They care for our premature babies, our elderly Alzheimer’s patients and everyone in between.

The women who started all this was Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), a British nurse and social reformer best known as the founder of modern nursing. May 12^th, her birthday, is International Nurses Day. Her experience as a nurse during the Crimean War was foundational in her views about sanitation. Her insight while tending wounded soldiers started a tradition that through the ages brave women and men have helped to make one of our most valuable professions.

So, thank you to all our nurses no matter where they serve, in medical facilities or on the battle fields. We really couldn’t survive without you.
