Safe Sleep For Babies

Safe Sleep Saves Lives!

Safe Sleep Saves Lives!

Every October, parents, caregivers, and advocates unite with Safe to Sleep® and its partners to spread awareness about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and promote safe sleep practices for infants.

Although SIDS rates have declined over the years, there’s still more work to do!

Did you know?  More than 1 in 3 sudden unexpected infant deaths in the U.S. are attributed to SIDS. Unsafe bedding—such as loose blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals—remains a leading cause of infant sleep-related deaths.

That’s why Home Hazard Prevention is here to help! Let’s ensure every baby sleeps safely and reduce the risk of SIDS together.

What is SIDS?

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby under 1 year old, typically occurring during sleep.

Key Facts:

  • About 2,300 babies die from SIDS each year in the U.S.
  • SIDS is most common between 1 and 4 months old.
  • It occurs more frequently in boys than girls.
  • Most cases happen in the colder months (fall, winter, and early spring).

While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent SIDS, parents and caregivers can greatly reduce the risk by following these safe sleep guidelines.

Creating a Safe Sleep Environment for Your Little One

✅ Always place your baby on their back to sleep – never on their side or stomach. ✅ Use a firm sleep surface – a crib with a tight-fitting sheet is best. ✅ Keep the crib clear – no blankets, pillows, bumpers, or stuffed animals. ✅ Avoid letting your baby sleep on beds, sofas, swings, or in car seats for extended periods. ✅ Don’t allow smoking near your baby – babies exposed to smoke are 3x more likely to die from SIDS. ✅ Breastfeed if possible – it can reduce the risk of SIDS by up to 50%! ✅ Use a pacifier at sleep time – it may help prevent SIDS. ✅ Prevent overheating – dress your baby in light layers and avoid loose blankets. ✅ Consider a sleep sack or wearable blanket – a great alternative to loose bedding!
