Stay Safe This Thanksgiving!

The holidays are here! That means family gatherings, delicious food, and lots of travel. Whether you’re hitting the road, flying across the country, or staying home to host the feast, safety should always be on the menu. At Home Hazard Prevention, we want to make sure your holiday is filled with joy—not accidents!
Let’s go over some Turkey Day Safety Tips to keep your family safe during the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving.
Traveling? Buckle Up for Safety!
Many of us will be traveling by car, plane, or train this Thanksgiving. While getting to your destination is exciting, staying safe on the way is just as important!
Car Seat Safety in Cold Weather: Bulky winter coats can make car seat straps too loose, putting children at risk. Instead, strap your child in snugly and place a warm blanket over them for extra warmth. (Check out our Winter Car Seat Safety Blog for more tips!)
Plan for Traffic Delays: Expect heavy traffic on major highways—leave early to avoid rushing.
Don’t Drive Drowsy: The night before Thanksgiving is one of the biggest party nights of the year! If you’re sleep-deprived or had a drink, don’t drive. Get rest or find a designated driver.
Stay Alert on the Road: Watch out for distracted or reckless drivers and drive defensively.
Pro Tip: You can’t enjoy your turkey dinner if you never arrive. Stay safe on the road!
Kitchen Safety: Avoid Thanksgiving Disasters!
Thanksgiving is one of the busiest cooking days of the year, which means it’s also one of the riskiest. Keep these kitchen safety tips in mind while preparing your feast:
Prevent Burns & Fires: Keep hot foods and pots away from the edges of counters to avoid spills and burns.
Deep-Frying a Turkey? BE CAREFUL! Never drop a frozen turkey into hot oil—it can overflow and ignite a fire! Always fry outdoors, away from flammable surfaces.
Watch the Little Hands: Kids are naturally curious—keep them away from stoves, hot ovens, and sharp knives.
Test Your Smoke Alarms! House fires increase over the holidays. Replace old batteries and make sure your smoke detectors work before you start cooking.
Fireplace & Home Safety
If your Thanksgiving involves cozying up by the fire, don’t forget these precautions:
Use a Protective Screen – Fireplaces can be mesmerizing, especially for kids and pets. Keep a sturdy screen in place to prevent burns.
Cool-Down Time Matters – Glass fireplace doors stay hot long after the fire is out—warn kids not to touch!
Plan Your Escape Route – Holidays are a great time to review fire escape plans with your family.
Smoke Alarm Check-Up: Most fatal fires happen in homes with non-working or missing smoke alarms. Test yours today!
Medicine & Poison Safety: “Up, Up & Away!”
Did you know that 67% of medication-related ER visits happen because kids got into easily accessible medicine?
Keep ALL medications out of sight and reach—this includes pain relievers, vitamins, and prescriptions.
Watch out for purses & nightstands—kids love to explore, and medicines are often left in bags or near beds.
Remind guests to store their medications safely if staying over.
Simple rule to remember: “Up, up, and away!”
Safe Sleep for Little Ones
Visiting family for the holidays? Sleeping arrangements matter!
Babies should always sleep in a safe crib, bassinet, or pack-n-play—NOT on a couch, air mattress, or adult bed.
No blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals—a firm mattress with a fitted sheet is all they need.
Back to Sleep! Always place babies on their backs to sleep safely.
Safe sleep isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity!
Have a Safe & Happy Thanksgiving!
The holidays should be filled with love, laughter, and good food—not accidents or trips to the ER. By following these Turkey Day Safety Tips, you’ll keep your family safe and make lasting holiday memories.
